BPC-157

Evidence profile: Preclinical, with limited uncontrolled human reports

BPC-157 is a synthetic chain of fifteen amino acids taken from a longer protein that was reported in human gastric juice and called body protection compound. That parent protein is described chiefly by the group who proposed it, and the peptide itself is known almost solely through the same group's output. The experiments are overwhelmingly in rodents and cover injury models of tendon, ligament, muscle and bone, damage to the stomach and intestine, and a number of nervous-system models. Human evidence amounts to a few small reports, not controlled trials, and replication by laboratories independent of the originators is limited.

Mechanism of Action

BPC-157 has no identified receptor. Rodent and cell experiments have recorded effects on several signalling systems: most frequently the nitric oxide system, VEGF receptor 2 signalling in endothelial cells, and the FAK-paxillin pathway in cultured tendon fibroblasts. Some animal papers describe links to dopamine and serotonin systems, and others have measured growth-factor and early-response gene expression in damaged tissue. Since these results come from few laboratories using different models, the mechanism is better described as unresolved than as a known pathway.
