Thymosin Alpha 1 vs VIP

A side-by-side research comparison of Thymosin Alpha 1 and VIP drawn from DRPSHP' peptide database records.

Thymosin Alpha 1

Thymalfasin, the pharmaceutical name for synthetic thymosin alpha 1, was named after the thymus gland from which calf-derived extracts were first purified. The molecule is 28 amino acids long with an acetyl group on the first residue, and it corresponds to the opening stretch of prothymosin alpha, a bigger protein that is thought to release it through proteolytic processing. A very acidic chain, it has little fixed structure when dissolved in water. Published work is divided between cell studies of immune signalling, animal models of infection and cancer, and human clinical studies, which have looked at chronic viral hepatitis, serious infection and responses to vaccination. Most of those human studies are small, and no cellular receptor has been established.

VIP

Vasoactive intestinal peptide was named for what its discoverers saw first, relaxation of blood vessels, after isolating it from gut tissue. It is a 28-residue amidated neuropeptide present in central and peripheral neurons and in the intestinal wall, a member of the secretin-glucagon family and a close relative of PACAP, with which it shares receptors. Today it is investigated as a neurotransmitter, a smooth-muscle signal and a link between nervous and immune systems. Most evidence comes from cells, tissues and animals. Small human studies of synthetic VIP exist, including for pulmonary (lung) conditions, though its removal from blood within minutes complicates them.

Reading a comparison

A comparison places two records side by side; it does not merge them. Each description above is drawn from that compound's own record, and the two were not necessarily characterised by the same methods, at the same time, or to the same level of detail. Before comparing any attribute, it is worth establishing that both records describe the substance you think they describe — names are not identifiers, and two entries sharing a name can differ in salt form, stereochemistry or the convention used to state a mass. Where a figure carries no method beside it, the comparison is between two reported numbers rather than between two measurements.
